Now, the case has moved on to the sanity phase — set to start Dec. 5 — where the same jury will rule whether Rivers was legally insane at the time of the murders. If so, state law dictates she’s sent to a mental hospital until she’s cured and/or for as long as she’d serve in prison for a triple murder conviction. Physical confrontations on UCLA’s campus had been relatively minor until late Tuesday night when pro-Israel counter-protesters lobbed fireworks at the encampment and attempted to dismantle the barricades.
At the time of the murder, Rivers was living in San Jose, and NBC Bay Area reports that Rivers was a security guard licensed to carry a weapon. The profile I found of Rivers on “The Living Room” does say that she struggled with drug and alcohol addiction for many years but at that time (which seems to be 2004) had been clean for 11 years. It’s worth noting that Rivers is white and the three people she killed are (to the best of my knowledge) of color, and last week saw a rash of racially-motivated hate crimes following the election of Donald Trump. Rivers had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, but her lawyers said that in any case, she did not kill the three victims. The trial was delayed so long "in part because doctors were debating her mental health status and preparing reports for the court," the paper reports.
If it finds she was legally insane, she will be "sent to a mental hospital until she's cured and/or for as long as she'd serve in prison for a triple murder conviction," the paper notes. Tuesday night, some 50 pro-Israeli counter-protesters, many of them dressed in black and wearing white masks, lobbed fireworks at those in the encampment and attempted to dismantle the barricades. JSU won 21 consecutive games in calendar year 2022, the longest streak in the nation entering the NCAA Tournament. Inside the house, police found the bodies of Wright and Reed, who had been shot and stabbed to death.
She then “began to make spontaneous statements about her involvement in the murders” and attempted to flee on her motorcycle. Tomekia Reed has been named the ninth women’s basketball head coach for the Charlotte 49ers. Reed, a three-time HBCU National Coach of the Year, comes to Charlotte following a highly successful six-year stint as head coach of the Jackson State Tigers. "Authorities say Rivers became wrapped up in her identity as an enforcer for an outlaw motorcycle club and sought revenge against Reed after she left the Deviants," the paper reports. But Rivers and Reed made up to the point that Reed allowed Rivers to spend the night on October 11, 2016, at the home Reed and her wife, Patricia Wright, shared in Oakland. She has spent the past six years awaiting trial, in part because doctors were debating her mental health status and preparing reports for the court, records show.
Empowering Those in Need at Davana Law Firm
Rivers has pleaded not guilty to all charges and remains in prison on no bond. Dana Rivers, 67, is accused of fatally shooting and stabbing Patricia Wright, 57 and her wife Charlotte Reed, 56, as well as Wright's 19-year-old son Benny Diambu-Wright. Police allege Rivers then set fire to the family's home in an attempt to destroy the evidence. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Patricia Wright, Charlotte Reed, and Benny Diambu-Wright. Earlier this year, their adopted son, identified in court documents as Toto M. Diambu but going by the name Benny Diambu-Wright, graduated from Berkeley High. He had been adopted from West Africa by Patiricia Wright at the age of eight.

Hostilities outside the encampment had been simmering since demonstrators took over Royce Quad last Thursday, setting up dozens of tents and surrounding themselves with metal fences and wood pallets. In a tragic twist, Dana Rivers was actually a very well-known transgender activist. She was in the Navy, was married three times, and worked for a decade as a Democratic political consultant in Orange County before she moved to Northern California, got a teaching certificate, and began teaching in 1991.

Tragically, Diambu-Wright, along with his 57-year-old mother and her 56-year-old partner, were found dead on the property of their Elmhurst home last Friday after suffering fatal gunshot and stabbing wounds. There was also a fire in the garage that the Oakland Fire Department extinguished within half an hour. Police had responded to reports of gunshots heard on the block a little after midnight, and immediately found Diambu outside, bleeding to death. After hearing a loud noise from the garage, a bloody 61-year-old Dana Rivers emerged from the house with knives and ammunition in her pockets.
